Salthouse is a charming coastal village nestled between a high ridge and a salt marsh in north Norfolk, with beautiful countryside scenery, set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and close to lovely beaches.
Just ten minutes’ drive from Blakeney, located on salt marshes, Salthouse is a great holiday base. The village is a charming tranquil spot to enjoy the views over the marshes, home to common and rare species of birds. Ideal for birdwatching, Salthouse Marshes and Salthouse Heath (found at the top of a high ridge), are part of a Norfolk Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve.
The high ridge was formed at the end of the last ice age, when the ice sheet ended at this point, melted and left behind all the material it was carrying, forming the ridge we see today. Salthouse Heath provides unrivalled views of the coastline as well as the village and is where you will find a bronze age burial ground. You can follow the network of footpaths across the heath nestled between ferns, heather and wild flowers. In past times, the views from here would have been of salt pans and large piles of salt crystals ready to be transported!
In the village is the parish church of St Nicholas, which runs many events. Salthouse also has a superb shingle beach, ideal for days out, walking, spotting wildlife and fishing.
This stretch of beach joins Kelling beach to the east and Cley-next-the-Sea beach to the west. Along the coastline is the ten-mile Salthouse Sculpture Trail, offering is an interesting walk with beautiful views. With plenty of places to eat, Salthouse is a tranquil place to visit, with lots to see and do.
