You are here: Visitor Info > Beach Safety & Lifeguards
Our beaches are some of the most beautiful and unique landscapes in the country, but they can bring unique dangers, with sand bars and fast-flowing channels appearing and disappearing on the tide. Follow the guidance below for a safe visit.
The beaches at Cromer West and East, East Runton, Mundesley, Sea Palling, Sheringham West, and East, Wells-next-the-Sea and West Runton are all patrolled by RNLI lifeguards from June to September between the flags. Do not enter the water if the red flag is showing. There are local lifeboat services in Cromer, Happisburgh, Hunstanton, Sheringham and Wells-next-the-Sea.
Before your visit, check the weather forecast, tide times and read local hazard signage. Keep a close eye on your family and friends both on the beach and in the water and don’t allow anyone to swim alone - and don’t use inflatables.
If you fall into the water unexpectedly, FLOAT to live. Fight your instinct to thrash around, lean back, move your arms and legs gently, control your breathing and float. In an emergency dial 999, and ask for the Coastguard.
Much of north Norfolk is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and home to wildlife which needs protecting. By following the Norfolk Coast Partnership's Coastal Code, we can protect the landscape, wildlife and each other.
Enjoy your visit and stay safe: Prepare any relevant maps, guidebooks and other information to take with you. Check for up-to-date advice and restrictions, e.g. limits on access in the breeding season. Let someone know where you're going and when you expect to return.
Respect people and place: Read local updates/information and act on any advice given. Use public transport, walk or cycle if you can. If using the car, please drive and park responsibly. Keep to paths/routes and leave gates as you find them. Use public waste bins or take litter home. Shop locally.
Protect the area and its wildlife: Take care not to disturb wildlife. Keep away from cordoned areas. Ensure you don't harm, destroy or remove any wildlife/plants/rocks. Only light fires and/or BBQs in designated places (see information about BBQs here).
Extra guidance for dog-walkers: Be aware of, and adhere to, restrictions limiting where dogs can go. Keep your dog close to you and under your control. Use a lead when needed or requested. Prevent your dog from approaching cordoned areas and please bag and bin your dog's poo. Find out where you can and can't take your dog here.
