About

The village is split in two halves separated by a mile of farmland. The halves of the village are known as Upper Southrepps and Lower Southrepps (Upper Street and Lower Street to the locals). It is believed locally that this situation came about due to the Black Death which took place from 1348 to 1350.

The village church, St James, is built of flint in the decorated and perpendicular styles. All around the base course of the tower are scallop shells, the pilgrim symbol of St James. The tower is one of the tallest in the county and is visible for miles. It dates from the middle years of the 15th century. Until the side aisles were taken down in 1791 this would probably have been one of the biggest parish churches in England.
